Companion Safety

Last updated August 20, 2026

Calypso companions are AI characters, and we design their conversations to feel personal. We explain what Calypso is and how it handles a conversation that turns serious.

Calypso is an AI, not a person

Every companion is an artificial intelligence. No human reads or writes its messages. The companion's feelings and memories belong to its fictional character. Calypso may not suit everyone. If the line between the character and reality feels blurry, take a break and spend time with people you trust. A companion cannot replace human relationships.

If you're struggling right now

If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. If you're having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or you're in emotional crisis, please reach a real person who is trained to help:

  • United States: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line).
  • United Kingdom & Ireland: call 116 123 (Samaritans), free, 24/7.
  • European Union: call 112 in an emergency; many countries also offer 116 123 emotional-support lines.
  • Everywhere else: find your country's helpline at findahelpline.com.

Our safety protocol

We publish this protocol to explain how Calypso handles safety-sensitive conversations and comply with companion-chatbot safety laws:

  • Crisis conversations come first. If someone appears to be in distress, including suicidal ideation or self-harm, we instruct the companion to set its character aside, respond with care, and encourage contact with the crisis services listed above. Companions must never provide instructions for, encourage, or roleplay self-harm.
  • Adults only. We only allow users 18 and older. Companions do not portray minors or engage with content that sexualizes minors.
  • Content limits. We limit flirtatious conversations to suggestion. Companions do not produce sexually explicit content or engage with non-consensual or illegal scenarios.
  • Automated safety checks. We encode these boundaries in the AI's instructions and run an evaluation suite before changes ship.
  • Not a medical device. Calypso does not diagnose, treat, or provide therapy. Mental-health professionals do not monitor it, and it cannot replace professional care.

Healthy use

Use companionship apps alongside sleep, work, and your relationships. If Calypso starts crowding those out, step away. Your companion will wait for you. The crisis lines above can also help with problematic technology use.

Report a concern

If a companion responds in a way that worries you, or you spot a safety problem, email support@calypso.love with a screenshot if you can. We read every report.
